Things From The Past III: Steak and Mash

The third of my things-I-photographed-before-this-blog series: Marinated steak, sweet potato mash and random vegetables.

This was relatively affordable steak - rump from Coles - marinated for a day in red wine, lime juice and sweet chilli.  I was pretty much throwing random stuff together, it came out pretty good. I put it straight from the freezer into a ziplock bag with the marinade in the morning, then retrieved it from the fridge when I got home.

The sweet potato mash is a favourite of mine - steamed sweet potato, butter (or butter-substitute-of-choice) and cayenne (or chilli flakes). The fat really carries the flavour of the steamed sweet potato, and the chilli and the sweetness are great.  I previously was not much of a fan of sweet potato, but I could eat this stuff by the bowlful.

The vegetables were just random crap chopped up and fried in a little oil with a little garlic.  Mostly cabbage, onion and carrot, it seems.

  1. Looking back at this photo... I am glad this tasted better than it looked.

  2. ICWYC (I cooked what you cooked) and it was tasty. :) I didn't have any red wine so I used soy sauce instead, which worked quite well, and I had carrot and green capsicum for the vegetables, which I cooked in the excess marinade. Sweet potato mash is awesome.

One of the things that I feel I lack in my cooking repertoire is tasty but not too difficult or time-consuming sides to go with a "piece of meat + sides" type of dish, leaving them being a bit boring and not something I do very often. So this is a welcome addition. :) Don't know how you made it but I used a trick my mum taught me for mashed potatoes - cut them up, put them in a tupperware dish in water (covered) and stick them in the microwave for about five minutes. Then they're already soft enough to mash and you can stick them straight in the pan. Took all of about 10 minutes total and some of that was waiting for other stuff to finish.
